ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Cellular phones, MP3 players such as IPODS, or other electronic devices are completely unnecessary during the school day and are disruptive to the learning environment. Although the administration recognizes the need for students to maintain close contact with parents outside the school day, students are reminded that electronic devices are not to be used during regular 7:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. school hours, nor during bus transportation. It is the expectation that students keep such items turned off and stored out of sight--not on their person. Any such item must be stored in a car, locker or book bag—and not on a belt or concealed in one’s clothing such as a pocket. Violations of this policy will result in disciplinary measures from probation to suspension. These items will be confiscated and returned only to the parent/guardian. Students are not permitted to use classroom phones. If a student must make an emergency call, they may do so from the main office or guidance suite. If for reason of illness such a call must be made from the health room or front office. In the event of a family emergency, parents should call the school office, and a message will be delivered to the student.
DRESS, APPEARANCE, COMPORTMENT AND PERSONAL PROPERTY
Principals have the authority to impose dress requirements designated to support the educational responsibilities of the school and/or to contribute to a safe and orderly environment. Examples would include the banning of items worn to depict gangs (hats, bandanas, sweatbands, caps, visors, etc.), clothing that may conceal weapons or other illegal items, such as drugs (outerwear jackets, etc), and items that may be used as weapons (metal belts, spiked collars, chains attached to wallets/keys, etc.). Students may be required to keep these items in a locker or other clothing storage areas during the school day. Individual teachers, with the approval of the Principal, shall have the specific authority to make additional modifications to further teaching and learning in their classrooms.
1. Students have the responsibility to dress and groom themselves in a manner that is safe, healthy, and non-disruptive to the classroom and school. Students have the responsibility not to wear or display buttons, armbands, flags, decals, and other badges of symbolic expression that disrupt the orderliness of the school or are legally libelous or obscene. Students are prohibited from wearing clothing or items that promote illegal or violent conduct, such as unlawful use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco or weapons. Students may not wear clothing or items that are obscene, libelous or feature sexually offensive or vulgar words, demeaning pictures, phrases, drawing, etc. For instance, students may not wear Hooters t-shirts, Big Johnson or Dirty Dick’s clothing which are offensive. Additionally, students may not wear clothing or belt buckles displaying the rebel flag.
2. Students are prohibited from wearing clothing that is unduly revealing (e.g. cut low at the neck or under the arms such as a “wife beater” shirt, exposes bare midriff, pants worn below the hips exposing the student’s underwear or skin, no spaghetti straps or bare shoulders). Shorts and skirts must pass the “fingertip” length for appropriateness. Bare feet are not permitted in a public school building. Students may not wear pajamas, bedroom slippers, or any other sleepwear. Students may not wear headgear of any kind (such as hats, headbands, bandanas, sweatbands, etc.).
3. Excessive public display of affection is unacceptable behavior and will result in a warning, then a call home with possible further disciplinary action. .
4. Riding/use of skateboards on school property is prohibited. Skateboards will be confiscated and taken to the school office and may be retrieved only by a parent/guardian of the student.
5. Laser pointers are not permitted in school. They will be confiscated, taken to the school office, and may be retrieved only by a parent/guardian of the student.
6. The school is NOT responsible for lost or stolen personal property items. Due to the risk of loss or theft, students may not bring electronic equipment such as radios, CD players, iPods, cameras, camcorders, computerized games, DVD players or similar items to school. School staff will not be responsible to searching for, or replacing lost or stolen items.
7. Audio or video taping without prior approval is a violation of personal rights and is a violation of Maryland State law.
8. The use, sale, or distribution of creatine or any other muscle enhancer/steroid is prohibited at UHS. Any student violating this policy will be referred to an administrator with consequences.
